Perinatal Mental Health

This is the period from conception through to one year post birth. It’s a period of intense challenge and change for the whole family system. Up to 1 in 5 expectant or new mums and 1 in 10 expectant and new dads experience PNDA. Perinatal mental health can also impact those who are considering becoming pregnant or whom have experienced fertility difficulties or perinatal loss. Prompt support is essential and fortunately for many, symptoms are treatable.
Perinatal treatment considerations include:
Adjusting to pregnancy, birth, the baby and the transition to parenthood
Anger and irritability
Anxiety and/or depression during the perinatal period
Difficulties with bonding and relationship with baby
Difficulties with infertility/ART
Grief and loss
Intrusive thoughts
Other mental health challenges exacerbated perinatally
Parenting strategies
Perineal injury
Relationship strain or changes during this period
Traumatic birth
